A feed mill near Katherine in the Northern Territory is getting back on track after a major fire tore through its hay shed.

According to mill owner National Livestock Solutions (NLS) last week's fire took four days to extinguish and burnt through about 15,000 bales of hay that would normally have been used to produce 11,000 tonnes of pellets.

It is estimated the fire burnt between $3 million and $4 million worth of hay.

"Fortunately, the quick actions of our staff onsite, neighbours and the local emergency services prevented the fire from spreading to the feed mill," NLS chief executive Linton Batt said .

"We're still on fire-watch 24 hours a day, making sure there's no embers or flare-ups.
