AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Food banks across the CSRA are experiencing massive demand as the government shutdown comes to an end.
Organizations are preparing for long-term effects on families and children facing food insecurity during the holiday season.
Hours before Mount Zion Baptist Church opened its doors Thursday morning, a line had already formed outside the building.
“When I got here, 8:30, 9 o’clock this morning, there was already a line here,” said Chavas Boyd, pastor at Mount Zion Baptist Church. “And I just realized, wow, what a blessing it is that we’ll be able to feed so many people who are in need.”
Despite the government shutdown ending Wednesday night, community organizations are preparing to feed the area’s most vulnerable residents for the long term.
