End of the penny doesn't make sense
I typically save pennies to hand out to those who may not have them at veteran tribute events. I just held our annual Veterans Day event for the Tiverton Historical Society at the WWI Doughboy Memorial in Tiverton. At the end of the event, after all the veterans present have posed for a photograph in front of the memorial, everyone puts their penny on the base of the memorial as tradition states.
This is the tradition upon visiting a veteran's memorial or gravesite:
A penny left on the memorial means that the site was visited.
A nickel indicates that the person visiting the site trained in boot camp with the veteran.
A dime left means that the person who left it served with the veteran in some capacity.
A quarter left means that the person who left
