Former Brookside star Vince Earl has issued an apology following accusations of making racist comments during a performance at the Royal Court. The Liverpool theatre has confirmed it will no longer work with the 81 year old and has pledged all future performers will need to sign an anti-racism statement.

The Royal Court initiated an internal investigation after remarks made during a comedy performance last month. Mr Earl, famous for playing Ron Dixon in the Merseyside soap opera, featured in the line-up for the Doddy Day Happiness Show on October 26.

The event, now in its sixth year, took place at the Liverpool theatre as a tribute to late comedian Ken Dodd's legacy with an afternoon of music and comedy. Nevertheless, the occasion became embroiled in controversy.
