On Oct. 29, I ate for the first time in 14 days: a half-cup of vegetable broth. I really wanted a steak and a beer but if I didn’t increase my nutrition gradually, I could have suffered a host of symptoms, including heart arrythmias and death.

I called my forbearance from food a “Fast for Healthcare.” I wanted to take a stand for the Affordable Care Act, sometimes known as Obamacare. It has been a Donald Trump target since its inception.

Now, it is imperiled as the Republicans in Congress block the renewal of ACA insurance subsidies, which are due to expire Dec. 31. In response, the Democrats are blocking passage of a funding bill until the Republicans back down. To pressure the GOP, I proposed to fast 14 days or until they relented, whichever came first.
