As temperatures dropped below freezing, an emergency winter shelter offered respite from the weather for Shelby's unhoused.

On Nov. 9, the Chosen Generation House of Hope Emergency shelter opened its doors for the season.

Tracey Norris, who helps run the shelter and whose husband is Johnny Norris Jr., pastor of the Royal Priesthood Biker Church, said check-in is at 5 p.m. at the Royal Priesthood Church at 634 S. Lafayette St.

People are then fed a hot meal and bussed to the shelter location, which is out in the county. They have access to a shower and a bed. In the morning, they are bussed back to Shelby.

"You get to stay inside in a safe environment and then they come back and eat breakfast the next morning," Norris said.
