Queen Elizabeth II knew how much Prince Philip wanted their children to carry his name.

But it wasn't until Prince Andrew was born in 1960 that Mountbatten Windsor—combining his and her families—was established as a surname for their non-titled, direct male-line descendants.

And yet neither the late queen nor her husband could have foreseen that Andrew would be relegated to going by Mountbatten Windsor 65 years later at the insistence of his older brother, King Charles III .
