Bihar Election Results: Did Congress’s Chhath Controversy Sink Mahagathbandhan And RJD’s Tejashwi?

By noon, the Bihar verdict had settled into a decisive, almost brutal clarity. The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) had surged to 201 seats, while the Mahagathbandhan found itself squeezed down to around 50.

The Congress — after delaying seat-sharing talks in hopes of a larger slice — emerged with just 5 seats, a fall of 14 seats compared to 2020. In pure performance terms, that is a 74% collapse.

While multiple factors shape any electoral outcome, one question is now echoing across Bihar’s political circles: Did cultural disrespect — especially the Congress leadership’s remarks about Chhath Puja — accelerate the Congress’ downfall and, in turn, that of Mahagathbandhan?
