Interim coach Fred McNair does have one clear bright spot in cornerback Landon Carter. The redshirt freshman has been a boon for the Jaguars' defense, which didn't have a turnover in the air until he had back-to-back games with an interception.
Carter had a pick returned to the end zone in last week’s 35-17 loss at Alcorn State. He read the quarterback’s eyes and jumped the hitch route and dodged a tackling opponent to return it 46 yards. This was the team’s first interception brought back for a touchdown since 2022.
Ahead of Southern’s game against Texas Southern (4-5, 3-3) at 2 p.m. at A.W. Mumford Stadium, McNair said that his cornerbacks's play is especially exciting to see from a walk-on player.
