ALBANY, N.Y. (WCAX) - In the latest bout of phone scams, fraudsters are calling people’s phones, claiming to work for the Department of Justice.
The New York Attorney General’s office says the scammers spoof their phone numbers so that when you get the call, it looks like it’s coming from a government agency.
During these calls, they focus on immigration-related matters, like visa status, and ask for personal information, like your address or location.
Scammers have even threatened retaliation if their demands are not met. The attorney general says their office would never ask for that kind of info or threaten consequences for not complying.
If you’ve received one of these scam calls, report it to the crime complaint center.
