On Tuesday, the United States observed Veterans Day, a day to honor all who served. Among them, the Navajo Code Talkers hold a singular place in American history.
This recognition is especially meaningful during November, which is Native American Heritage Month
In 1982, Navajo Code Talkers were guests of honor at the Intertribal Ceremonial held annually in Gallup, New Mexico. Regarded as America’s “secret weapons” in World War II, the Code Talkers served throughout Allied ranks, broadcasting radio messages in Navajo that Japanese forces never cracked.
One veteran reflected on his service, saying, “This country is Indian country; this is our country. And we have all the right in the world to fight for our country.”
Watch to see these unsung heroes receive their recognition.
