GRAFTON, W. Va. ( WDTV /Gray News) - A couple in West Virginia was arrested for allegedly abusing a 9-year-old girl.

Lewis Nuzum II, 52, and 45-year-old Josephine Nuzum have each been charged with child abuse resulting in injury and child neglect resulting in injury, according to the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office.

The investigation began after the 9-year-old girl showed up to school with bruises on her face. Authorities said she told staff she had been locked in her room and beaten.

The child described a silver and green metal flyswatter, a brown belt with a turquoise buckle and a wooden paddle with holes in it that were all used to beat her. Those specific items were located during a search of the Nuzum’s residence, court documents say.
