Thousands of drivers are using a car tax "loophole" to escape a new £195 charge from the Labour Party government. EV drivers, behind the wheel of electric cars, have rushed to renew their registrations early.

It allowed them to escape new Vehicle Excise Duty rules from the Labour Party government that came into force in April. More than 300,000 electric cars were renewed with the DVLA before the deadline, marking about a quarter of all EVs on UK roads.

The National Audit Office says EV road users have avoided an estimated £30million in road tax as a result of the handy workaround.
