Brian Walshe returns to court Friday as doctors assess whether he is mentally competent to stand trial for allegedly killing his wife, Ana, on New Year’s Day in 2023.

Walshe will appear in Norfolk Superior Court after a scheduled Oct. 27 hearing was canceled. The case stalled when an inmate reportedly stabbed Walshe in jail on Sept. 11.

Walshe is charged with murder, intimidating a witness, and dismembering and discarding his wife’s body.

Despite Walshe showing progress since the attack, his lawyer, Larry Tipton, previously wrote in court documents that the “mental and physical effects of the violent assault” continued to prevent Walshe from fully participating in preparing his defense, adding that he was not functioning at the same level as before the in
