COVINGTON, Ky. (WXIX) - One person is dead and another is hospitalized after an early morning house fire and explosion, according to Covington Fire Chief Corey Deye.

Flames broke out in the 1800 block of Garrard Street around 1:30 am. Friday, according to Kenton County dispatchers.

The person who died was found inside the home, according to the chief.

One person with minor injuries was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Covington, Chief Deye said.

It’s not clear yet how many people were inside the home when the fire began, the chief said.

Neighboring homes and residents were evacuated as a precaution, but will be able to return to their homes.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The American Red Cross has been notified, the chief added.
