There is just under five months to go until sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 will be required to use Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax. The launch on April 6, 2026 marks a significant and ultimately time-saving change in how these individuals will need to keep digital records and report their income to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). ‌

Five months may feel like a long time away, but HMRC is advising customers to get ahead of the game now and join the testing programme. ‌

HMRC explained: “It will give you the chance to get comfortable with the new system before it becomes mandatory and access to our dedicated support team - essentially a safety net while you learn the ropes.” ‌
