More voters came out for New Jersey’s 2025 general election than any other governor’s race in the past 27 years.

About 54% of registered voters cast a ballot in the 2025 election, unofficial voting data shows. That’s the highest turnout for the past seven gubernatorial races, and the second-highest for a non-presidential year since 1998.

Democrat Mikie Sherrill beat Republican Jack Ciattarelli , earning more than 56% of the vote in the election to succeed outgoing Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy .

More than 3.15 million people voted, the voting data shows. That is lower than the 4.3 million who voted in the presidential election last year, but much higher than the number who voted in the 2021 governor’s race.
