COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVG) - Ohio is one step closer to overhauling family law in the state in what supporters say is roughly 20 years of work.
The 422-page bill will change the way parents and custodians are viewed under the law. It aims to modernize and delegate parenting responsibilities in a way that’s child-focused, the sponsors said.
Northwest Ohio state senators Theresa Gavarone (R-Bowling Green) and Paula Hicks-Hudson (D-Toledo) worked together on drafting the legislation.
“While the relationship between a child and both parents should be fostered, the priority must be what’s in the child’s best interest,” Gavarone said. “The child’s best interest needs to come first.”
The Senate passed the bill 29-2 on Wednesday. It now moves to the House for consideration. The legislation :
