Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow is requesting $210 million from the Ontario government to pay for current and future road safety measures in the city after speed cameras were outlawed across the province.
At Thursday’s council meeting , the mayor brought forward a motion that would see the city ask Premier Doug Ford and his government to reimburse Toronto for the full operating costs of 911 crossing guards at $31.2 million and 18 traffic safety police officers at $3.9 million.
In addition, the city is also requesting the province pay for road safety initiatives to alleviate the loss of revenue from speed cameras, including $95.8 million for local safety improvements, $13.92 million for traffic calming, and $40.6 million for traffic lights and other safety measures.
