CLEVELAND, Ohio --Just in time for the holiday season, Patriotic Santa will return to the Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Monument on Public Square during Winterland festivities on Saturday, Nov. 29.
The historically inspired Santa — based on an illustration published in “Harper’s Weekly” on Jan. 3, 1863 — will greet visitors from noon to 5:30 p.m.
Patriotic Santa was created by famed illustrator Thomas Nast, who blended elfin German imagery and European Santa Claus mythology to form what became one of the earliest American depictions of Santa. The monument’s version brings that 19th-century design to life.
Families — pets included — are welcome to stop by the monument and snap a free, one-of-a-kind photo with Patriotic Santa using their cell phone or personal device.
