SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The South Carolina Department of Public Health is reporting one new case of measles in the state since Tuesday.

The total number of cases in South Carolina now related to the Upstate outbreak is 44, and the total number reported to DPH this year is 47.

Measles cases have surged dramatically across North America, with Canada reporting more than 5,000 cases as of last month — more than twice as many as the previous 25 years combined.

There are currently 18 people in quarantine.

The agency is reminding people that travel for the upcoming holidays increases the risk of exposures greatly for those traveling and for those accepting visitors.

The agency urges people to consider getting vaccinated now.
