(WKYT) — With Christmas getting closer, the Capitol Christmas tree will soon be on full display.

For today’s Good Question, a viewer asked: How do they keep the Capitol Christmas tree green during transport?

If you set up a real Christmas tree at your home, it’s important that you keep it watered. The same rules apply to the tree that is on its way to the U.S. Capitol, although the technique is a bit different.

Tree’s cross-country journey

The tree, named Silver Belle, was harvested on Oct. 24 in Nevada and is making its way across the U.S.

A water bag is attached to the base of the tree. It holds about 80 gallons of water and is sealed with toilet wax and tie-down straps to the base of the tree.
