I just nipped out for a sandwich and saw an old woman nearly get blown off her feet. Even the dog, who normally loves a bit of wild weather , didn’t fancy it.

Storm Claudia is here and is set to ‘bring a month’s worth of rain in just 24 hours’. Severe weather warnings have been issued by the Met Office with parts of the UK expected to be affected by heavy downpours and potential flooding throughout Friday and Saturday morning.

The storm is already causing some travel disruption with a fallen tree meaning trams were suspended on the Metrolink line between Bury and Whitefield , while some train companies, including Avanti West Coast and TransPennine Express, have cancelled services - with passengers urged to 'avoid travelling' where possible
