MANSFIELD, CT (WFSB) - Human remains discovered at a boat launch in Mansfield were that of a man who disappeared more than 20 years ago, state police announced.

They said the remains were identified as Robert Cavanaugh, who was reported missing on Dec. 24, 2004.

Troopers said the remains were found floating in the water of Mansfield Hollow Lake on Oct. 5, 2025.

Divers recovered additional remains as well as a submerged vehicle, state police revealed.

Along with the vehicle, detectives said they found parking passes, a name tag, and a license plate.

The vehicle was a 1996 Mazda B2300 pickup truck that belonged to Cavanaugh.

At the time of his disappearance, Cavanaugh was believed to have left a suicide note, state police said.
