The Real Housewives changed the reality TV game for Bravo. After launching in 2006 with The Real Housewives of Orange County, other networks tried replicating what was working so well for Bravo, but fell short with empty storylines and fake characters.

What separates The Real Housewives from other reality TV shows is the casting, more specifically, Bravo's ability to find women who have skeletons in their closets, hidden by wealthy lifestyles and friendship drama. What followed the premiere of RHOC was a massive fandom, spanning multiple cities through numerous spinoffs.
