NEWBURGH, N.Y. — A 45-year-old Newburgh man was fatally shot by a Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital security guard when he attacked a guard in the emergency room, according to the Newburgh Police Department.

Carlos Ortiz, 45, was later pronounced dead of a single gunshot wound after the shooting, which took place on Thursday, Nov. 13, at about 11:07 p.m.

A woman, who was not identified and was in close proximity to the altercation, was also injured with what appears to be a non-life-threatening injury, police said.

Police had responded to the hospital emergency room after getting a report of a shot being fired, police said. Prior to police receiving the call for service, the Newburgh Fire Department was dispatched to St. Luke’s for a fire alarm box pulled in the emergency room lob
