TRANSYLVANIA COUNTY, N.C. (FOX Carolina) - The U.S. Forest Service said a large prescribed burn is being conducted in western North Carolina on Friday.
FOX Carolina crews were able to see a large cloud of smoke on the horizon from the news station in Greenville.
Officials said the prescribed burn is to reduce overgrown vegetation and protect the community from wildfires.
Areas planned for the prescribed burn include Coontree Rec Area, Coontree Loop Trail, Bennett Gap Trail, Avery Creek Road, and Pisgah Riding Stables.
These areas may be closed through Nov. 15 for public safety.
