GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- The Genesee County Board of Commissioners is changing the process for appointing members to its Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Commission, ending a practice in which the commission appointed its own members.
Board members approved the change in direction at their meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 12, putting them in charge of future appointments after Commissioner Shaun Shumaker, R-Fenton Township, pushed for the change.
Shumaker, a former DEI Commission member who resigned from the position earlier this year, said he proposed the change to make the appointment process consistent across county government.
“I want it to be the same process across the board,” he said. “None of our boards should be any different.”
