An arrest was made Friday morning in the shooting of former football coach and current athletic director John Beam at Laney College in Oakland, according to Oakland police.

Sources told NBC Bay Area police arrested Cedric Irving Jr., 27, in Beam's shooting. Irving is a former Skyline High School student and football player. Irving did not attend Skyline while Beam was coach at the high school.

The suspect’s brother said Irving at some point practiced with the Laney football team but was never on the team.

The shooting occurred just before noon Thursday, sending Beam to the hospital in critical condition, authorities said.

Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee released a statement later Friday morning addressing the arrest.
