MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (WITN) - The outcome in the Morehead City mayor’s race remains unchanged after today’s recount, but Mayor Jerry Jones is continuing with his election protest.

Lee Stiles still has a one-vote lead over Jones, 762 votes to 761 votes.

But the current mayor filed an election protest with the Carteret County Board of Elections during the canvass meeting last Friday, after voters contacted him on the day of voting and afterwards.

“I started getting calls from people that they were denied their rights to vote, their constitutional right to vote,” Jones said. “They said they were told they do not live in Morehead City.”

Jones has been the mayor of Morehead City since 1999.

The elections board will meet on Monday to consider the protest.
