KINGSTON — The Ontario government announced it would not pursue public consultations about potential changes to rent controls.

In late October, Rob Flack, Ontario’s Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister, introduced legislation designed to streamline housing approvals and reduce delays at the Landlord and Tenant Board.

In addition, the government announced plans for consultations on rules that allow tenants to stay in their units after their lease expires on a monthly basis provided there is no legal reason to evict them.

Critics said such changes to these security of tenure rules could make it more difficult for tenants to keep their apartments.
