A box jellyfish advisory has been issued for south-facing shores of Oahu, which include Waikiki and Ala Moana beaches.
The HNL Alert was issued at about 9:45 a.m. today after lifeguards observed box jellyfish on south-facing shores. Lifeguards have posted warning signs.
Box jellyfish, which belong to the invertebrate Phylum Cnidaria, typically appear from eight to 10 days after a full moon and can leave painful stings upon contact.
“Always check with a lifeguard for the latest beach and ocean conditions,” the alert said. “In an emergency, call 911.”
