Harrisburg resident Cal Hollman was at his doctor’s office for a regular checkup in May when he got unexpected news: a screening found the early stages of prostate cancer.
For Hollman, who narrowly survived getting shot in the back in Harrisburg in the 1990s, it wasn’t the first time he’d faced death. But it was by far the scariest.
“When I got shot, most of the time I was out of it,” he said. “This time it was something I had no control over.”
He underwent surgery soon after his diagnosis and had his prostate removed. Recovery from the surgery can take up to nine months, but he’s been cancer-free ever since.
Hollman, 62, is encouraging men over age 50 to attend a free prostate screening on Saturday at the Penn State Health outpatient center at 429 N 21st St. in East Pennsboro Townsh
