Beloved football coach John Beam, who was featured on Netflix’s Last Chance U is dead at the age of 66.

Beam was shot on campus at Laney College in Oakland, California on Thursday, November 13. His death was confirmed by the Oakland Police Department on Friday, November 14.

“I’d like to begin by taking a moment to honor the life of a man deeply beloved in this community,” police chief Floyd Mitchell said in a press conference. “Coach John Beam, unfortunately passed away this morning from a gunshot wound that he sustained yesterday. I know that Coach Beam meant a lot to the Oakland community and beyond.”

Mitchell read a statement from the Beam family, who conveyed that they were “devastated” by his death.
