Firefighters continue to battle a fire on Mana Road, a 40-plus mile road that connects Maunakea Access Road to Mamalahoa Highway in Waimea.
The fire, which has burned about 2,100 acres about seven miles from Maunakea Access Road, was about 70% contained, Hawaii Fire Department Battalion Chief Melanie Keolanui said Thursday.
“There was a lot of rain (Wednesday) night, which was great, and Civil Defense approved the Black Hawk military air support until (today),” Keolanui told the Hawaii Tribune-Herald.
Talmadge Magno, Hawaii County Civil Defense administrator, called the blaze “a stubborn fire because of the nature of the vegetation it’s burning in.”
