If you’re a Hampton University fan, the sight of William & Mary quarterback Tyler Hughes on Armstrong Stadium’s turf for Saturday’s Colonial Athletic Association game might elicit a reaction like Mr. Bill of Saturday Night Live past: “Ohhhh noooo! Not him!”
Indeed, Hughes’ claim to area fame ahead of his 2025 breakout with the Tribe (6-4, 5-2) was primarily as a Pirate killer. His only start prior to this fall was as a fill-in for injured Darius Wilson at Armstrong two years ago, when he led the Tribe to a 31-10 victory.
With the score tied at 10 midway through the fourth quarter, his play-fake froze the Pirates’ defense as he passed to wide-open JT Mayo for a go-head 76-yard touchdown. Hughes capped the win with a 6-yard touchdown run.
