MANCHESTER – It may take months, but more likely years, for the Abington boys soccer squad to fully comprehend the implications of its historic victory Friday morning in the PIAA Class 4A championship match.

With a dominating 3-1 victory over West Chester Henderson, not only did the Galloping Ghosts register the program’s first state title, it was later revealed that longtime head coach Randy Garber is stepping down from his position after 32 seasons at the helm.

“This is huge,” Garber said. “The last (Abington) team to win a state championship was 41 years ago in (boys) lacrosse. Before that the (boys) basketball team won a title in 1974. Those are the only two until today.

“It’s a long time coming and it means a lot.”
