The principal of a Saratoga County middle school resigned hours after being arrested for allegedly misusing union funds.
Maple Avenue Middle School Principal Scott Singer stepped down from his position effective Thursday, Nov. 13. The Board of Education accepted his resignation during its meeting that same evening, Superintendent Michael Patton said in a message to families.
Singer, 48, of Ballston Spa, was arrested Thursday following a two-month investigation into alleged misuse of funds tied to his role as an elected officer in the Saratoga Springs Administrators Association, a New York State Police spokesperson told Daily Voice.
Singer, who had served as the association’s treasurer, was accused of using union money for his own personal gain, police said. He was charged with petit larceny, a misdemeanor.
Patton told parents the concerns involving Singer were not tied to his work as a building principal, and the issues did not involve students, staff, or misuse of district or taxpayer funds.
The school district will appoint an interim principal to guide the building during the transition, Patton said. He thanked the school’s administrative team, teachers, support staff, and families for helping maintain stability for students.
Singer is expected to appear in court at a later date.
