A Schenectady man is accused of driving the wrong way on the New York State Thruway and crashing head-on into another SUV, injuring himself and three others.
The Albany County collision happened around 4:15 a.m. Friday, Nov. 14, on the I-90 Exit 25 ramp in Guilderland, according to New York State Police.
Owen Abraham, 30, was attempting to enter the Thruway eastbound in the westbound lanes while driving a Honda Pilot when he struck a BMW SUV that was exiting the ramp, police said.
Abraham, the sole occupant of the vehicle, displayed signs of impairment and failed field sobriety tests at the scene, according to police. A preliminary breath test returned a positive result for alcohol, police said.
He was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and related charges, and taken to Ellis Hospital with a leg laceration before being transferred to Albany Medical Center for further treatment.
The three occupants of the BMW were also taken to Albany Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The right lane of the ramp was closed for several hours while investigators cleared the scene and towed the vehicles.
State Police urged drivers to use the STOP-DWI “Have a Plan” app, which connects users to taxi and rideshare options, allows them to create designated driver lists, and provides a tool to report suspected impaired drivers.
