Three games in, ODU still searching for outside shot

NORFOLK — True to anticipated form, Old Dominion has attempted 49 3-pointers in its past two games.

Far less predictably, the Monarchs have missed 40 of them.

But the misfires are far from being a source of panic for second-year coach Mike Jones.

When ODU (2-1) visits George Washington on Saturday to open a two-game road swing, Jones expects his players to keep after it from beyond the arc. Help is on the way.

The Monarchs made 5 of 25 in Tuesday’s 60-57 home win over Norfolk State. During a crucial 17-0 run midway through the game, ODU mostly abandoned the 3-point line and began to attack the paint.

It’s a handy weapon for the team to have at its disposal, but it’s not ODU’s true identity.
