WASHINGTON — The selection of HKS marks a major milestone in the Commanders' plan to transform 180 acres at the historic RFK site into a sports and entertainment destination anchored by a 65,000-seat roofed stadium.

In their announcement, the Commanders pledged "sustainability" will be at the forefront of the stadium design. The DC Sierra Club says it will hold the team to that promise.

"This whole space is a generational opportunity to build something that's green, sustainable, world-class stadium and neighborhood," said David Whitehead, chapter director of the DC Sierra Club. "It's also an incredible threat if we do it wrong."
