Immigrant rights advocates and lawmakers gathered Friday at a CASA-organized rally to renew efforts to end Maryland’s participation in federal 287(g) agreements that allow local law enforcement to collaborate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Delegate Nicole Williams, a Prince George’s County Democrat, announced she will reintroduce legislation in the upcoming session to prohibit counties from entering into or renewing such agreements. The bill has passed the Maryland House of Delegates twice but stalled in the Senate.
“We are just sick and tired of what is going on federally, of what is going on when ICE comes into our communities,” Williams said, adding that the proposal is meant to restore trust between police and residents.
