MIDDLEFIELD, Ohio — A severely malnourished dog with an apparent gunshot wound was found in Geauga County, prompting an animal-cruelty investigation, according to local officials.

The dog, now being called Jackie, was found along Ohio 87 in Middlefield last week by a passerby who reported that she appeared injured on the roadside. Authorities said the dog was extremely underweight and showed signs of neglect.

Jackie was taken to a veterinarian for evaluation, where staff confirmed she had been shot and was suffering from starvation. Officials said the dog’s condition suggested the injury and neglect occurred over an extended period.

“She’s just starting to get used to people again,” an official from the sheriff’s office said during a commissioner’s meeting Thursday.
