PITTSFORD, Vt. (WCAX) - The University of Vermont’s Consulting Archaeology Program is working with state transportation officials to dig into Pittsford’s past.

UVM Students and researchers have been digging along Route 7 in Pittsford, looking for remnants of a homestead and fort that existed centuries ago.

Remnants of Fort Vengeance, a Revolutionary War structure, were discovered at the site decades ago. John Crock, who leads the UVM program, is helping document the history as Vermont approaches the semiquincentennial.

“This was a fort built by Vermonters, commissioned by the state of Vermont to protect farmers in Rutland County,” Crock said.
