After taking over the world, Labubu are seemingly headed to the big screen.
A feature film on the adorable, ugly monster dolls that have become a trendy phenomenon across the world is in the works after Sony reportedly acquired the movie rights, according to Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter.
Development is very much in the early stages with no writer or director attached to the project, the outlets reported. It's unclear whether the movie will be animated or live-action.
USA TODAY has reached out to Sony, which declined to comment to Deadline and THR.
Hong Kong-born illustrator Kasing Lung designed Labubu in 2015 based on Nordic mythology, according to parent company Pop Mart. The toys have large heads, sharp teeth and big eyes while donning fuzzy pajamas and various vibrant outfits.
Labubu expected to become a billion-dollar business
The movie discussions come as the collectible plush toy dolls are slated to develop into a billion-dollar business by the end of 2025, surpassing toy staples from Hot Wheels to Barbie, Pop Mart reported earlier this year.
Labubus recently achieved global success after becoming viral and difficult to attain. Its undeniable popularity even prompted retailers to sell counterfeit versions of the dolls, which the public has deemed as Lafufus.
Many Labubus are sold in blind boxes, where consumers purchase without knowing which specific variant they will take home.
The dolls have slowly emerged in Hollywood thanks to celebrities who have showcased their own, including Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton and David Beckham.
