Tavares Hutchinson is set to walk out of the Broward County Jail on Friday, free after serving 26 years in Florida’s prisons.
“He went in in his 20s and now he’s almost 50 years old, and so that is a big chunk of his life that was lost to this situation,” said Hutchinson’s lawyer, Brandon Scheck, the legal director for the Innocence Project of Florida.
Police said Hutchinson committed an armed robbery back in 1999 and stole a man’s gold chain.
In his motion to have his conviction thrown out, Hutchinson argued the necklace police found in his possession was nothing like the 14-karat gold Gucci-style chain the victim said was stolen. Testing showed Hutchinson's necklace wasn't even 14 karat gold.
