WINTERSET, Iowa —
A Winterset couple whose home was left uninhabitable following the deadly 2022 tornado finally has a place to call their own again.
Mandy and Ryan Gainuss moved into their new house roughly three and a half years after the EF-4 tornado swept through just outside of Winterset, killing six people on Carver Road and destroying the home where Ryan had lived for decades.
For Mandy, few activities bring more joy than baking.
“My grandma baked, and sometimes I feel like she’s with me when I’m baking," said Mandy Gainuss.
However, after the tornado, baking inside their home wasn’t an option.
Instead of a home, the couple lived in a bright red shed outfitted with a bed, a wood stove and a tiny living space. The shed served as their home when they were first interviewed in
