MADISON, Wis. -- The City of Madison Transportation Commission officially ordered the permanent removal of the peak-hour traffic lanes on Williamson St. following a two-month test of the street's traffic patterns.
" We were a little bit surprised that it worked as well as it did," said Assistant Director of Traffic Engineering Tom Mohr.
Mohr said the study didn't show significant congestion on Willy St. or surrounding routes due to the lane removals.
"I t's still able to take basically the same amount of traffic that it took with the peak-hour lanes," he said.
According to survey results, 76.1% of Willy St. residents supported the lane removal. When broken down by mode of transportation, 80.63% of pedestrians, 91.45% of bicyclists, 34.35% of drivers and 34.78% of transit users also
