Christmas comes but once a year, but festive spending can upend your budget for months. With presents, food and wine to buy, an end-of-year break might seem off the cards. Research from short-term rental data company Key Data suggests that December getaways in the UK can be double the price of a November break.

The average daily rate of a stay in Edinburgh, for example, jumps from £182 a night in the week starting 17 November to £290 in the week beginning 22 December. In the Cotswolds, meanwhile, the cost jumps from £217 to £330.
