Despite getting 11 shots blocked by one player, Hampton University persevered for a 72-63 victory Friday night over Brown in the College Hill Classic in Providence, Rhode Island.

Michael Eley scored 18 points for the Pirates (2-2) in their first road victory and triumph over a Division I foe. Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt had 16 points and six assists, and Daniel Johnson came off the bench for 17 points, four steals and three rebounds. Xzavier Long grabbed 15 rebounds.

An Eley 3-pointer with 18:55 left put Hampton ahead to stay, 33-30. The Pirates led by as many as 12.

HU hit 22 of 28 free throws but was just 24 of 59 from the field. That was in large part to Brown’s N’famara Dabo, a 6-foot-8 forward from Guinea who swatted 11 Hampton shots as well as producing 11 points and seven rebounds in 37
